Legoland? LEGOLAND? What the heck is Legoland? These were my responses when I was invited to meet my friend’s son and grandson at this park in Carlsbad. Having visited it twice now, I’ve christened it Legoland Delightful Distraction
There are ten LEGOLAND® parks all over the world. I visited the one in Carlsbad, California – a two-hour drive from my home.
If you have not yet been to Legoland, here are seven reasons to consider going
Truly a different kind of amusement park
I describe Legoland as a Disneyland built with Legos. It has many of the same features as Disneyland, especially for themes. Some, but not all, include:
- Imagination Zone
- Land of Adventure
- Castle Hill
- Pirate Shores
- Fun Town
- Explorer Island
Each area has its own set of restaurants, rides, and attractions. Additional themes include:
Sealife Aquarium
This exhibit costs additional money, and I found it a disappointment. The magnificent aquariums have spoiled me at Long Beach and Monterey. However, for children, it would be a worthwhile visit.
Waterpark
The waterpark is seasonal. Since I went off-season two times, the waterpark was not open. Even if it was not my choice of entertainment as a 68-year-old senior
Miniland
For me, Miniland is the most impressive exhibit at the park. Miniland recreates seven iconic American regions with 20 million lego bricks! And if that isn’t enough to blow your mind – many components of each area have moving parts. Unbelievable.
Interactive Attractions
I am so impressed with the interactivity Legoland offers. For example, Mainland is built around a huge lagoon that sports all kinds of boats that spectators can actually steer using the wheels along the side. But, of course, one must be careful not to ram some birds that frequent the pond.
Some rides waiting for lines have a center where kids can play with legos while waiting. Brilliant! Other interactive activities include building a boat with legos – a popular spot for kids.
Interactive Rides
Unlike Disneyland, where you sit as a spectator through a ride, Legoland has rides utilizing the technology of video games. Three rides I went on had interactive features:
- Deep-Sea Adventure
- Ninjago Ride
- Pharo’s revenge
Carnival Games
I have always enjoyed carnival game booths – and Legoland has plenty of them. Who doesn’t like to win a stuffed animal? But, of course, you pay extra for the opportunity to play. Judging by the many parents holding the winnings for their kids – that doesn’t stop many!
Healthy food options
So often, the food at amusement parks is, well, cardboard, synthetic. For my senior tummy, they are especially offensive. However, at Legoland, there are LOTS and LOTS of food choices – fresh – including a restaurant that has a fruit and salad bar. LOVE IT
Convenient overnight stays
Like Disneyland and California Adventure, it is impossible to enjoy all Legoland offers in one day. Even two days is pressing it! No problem. There are two Lego-themed hotels on the premises that are so full of themes – they are like a separate lego adventure in and of themselves. I was able to see one of the rooms occupied by my friends’ grandson. I was especially impressed with the room divided into two rooms. A large room with a king bed for adults and a small cubby-hole type room with bunk beds for kids. Legoland spares no detail in these themed rooms. Just phenomenal.
If you would prefer peace and quiet – Carlsbad has many, many hotels you can choose from off the Legoland premises.
Get in touch with your inner child at Legoland Delightful Distraction
Legoland is advertised as an amusement park for kids 2-12. That could be why my husband and I found ourselves to be the only seniors standing in line to ride one of the three rollercoasters. I say PHOOEY! Legoland is for everyone – kids and grandparents alike! Even if you do not ride ANY rides – the visual delight of the park is enough to put you back in touch with your inner child. This is the primary reason behind Legoland Delightful Distraction. Enjoy the video
